seed treatment

to protect seeds from pests and fungal diseases.

introduction

Seeds in store and young developing plants in the soil are particularly susceptible to attack by many fungal diseases and pest. Seed treatments are an important procedure carried out either to protect the seed in store, or to protect the embryo and young developing crop plant following planting in the soil. Fungal pathogens present on the seed and in the soil can destroy or adversely affect both stored seed and young growing plants. Pests in the soil can also adversely affect young growing seedlings. Seed treatment equipment tends to be simple small batch apparatus but can be more sophisticated to treat larger volumes of seed. Rates of use tend to be given in grams or litres per 100 Kg of seed rather than g or L per hectare rates.
